I heard about Power Morphicon back in May when my friends and I went to Big Wow Comicfest in San Jose. I met Steven Skyler (Gold Samurai Ranger) there and he had flyers on his table about it.
"Come to this! All the rangers will be there!" For some odd reason, I thought Jason David Frank would be there so I said "Yay! I’ll go!" Steven is so charming that he could convince a lady wearing
white gloves to hold melting ketchup popsicles. What? Haha! That was a weird interpretation of that cliche.
Anyway, fast forward to late August. Ryan, Barrett, and I took my sister to Disneyland for a surprise birthday present! Morphicon didn’t start until Friday the 22nd but we left a day early and told
her we decided to check into our hotel early. We didn’t do that great of a job with our reveal, though. Google Maps took us to the cast member’s parking garage and we said “Surprise! We got you a
new job!” We’re the greatest. Hahahaha! Eventually, we made it to the park. Lots of waiting in line but we went on rides that my sister had never been on. I love the Radiator Springs Racers in
Carsland! We also had to stop at the LEGO store in Downtown Disney. Barrett loves that store. I liked the big Genie, Aladdin, and Jasmine made out of LEGO pieces.
We got to the Westin Hotel in Pasadena around 9pm and got room service. I usually always get shrimp cocktail whenever we get room service but I got cappellini instead. (Hey! It had shrimp in it!)
Day 1 of Power Morphicon! It was more like a preview day and not as crowded. The exhibition hall didn’t open until 4pm but registration opened at noon. We stood in line for about 2 hours to get our
badges. Silver ranger status! It was fun seeing a lot of the cosplayers in line. My favorite was someone dressed as Big One from JAKQ Dengekitai. I loved all the Super Sentai cosplays! I felt at
home! Got a lot of cool stuff in our “swag bag”. A Power Morphicon t-shirt, a Henshin coin, and a Gokaiger/Super Megaforce pin. Ryan went into a separate line to wait to buy the limited edition
Ranger keys. My sister, Barrett and I went to Starbucks for lunch and then sat down in the hallway near the exhibiton hall doors. We saw Karan Ashley (second Yellow Mighty Morphin) walking towards
the restroom and when I realized who she was I automatically blurted out “HI KARAN!” like an idiot. She was so nice, though. I’m sure she was used to it and said “Hey, girl! How are you?” And the
fangirl feelings start! Later on, Austin St. John (Red Mighty Morphin Ranger) used that same restroom and when he was walking back, he waved at us and Barrett got so shy. I think seeing the “real”
Power Rangers got Barrett super pumped though because he kept saying “I’m so excited! I want to meet the actors now!”
Finally the doors opened at 4! I saw a post on Facebook that Walter Jones (Might Morphin Black
Power Ranger) was holding a dance class later on that night and we rushed around trying to figure out how to sign up. When the doors opened, we booked it to find Walter’s booth. There was already a
long line to meet Austin St. John but there was barely anyone at Walter’s table. There was only 2 people on the list so far. The class was limited to 50 people. I asked Walter where the class was
taking place and he said he had no idea. HAHA! He sent a text message to his manager and while we were waiting for the reply, we “chopped it up” with Mr. Mastodon himself. He was so nice. Barrett
was really shy when Walter tried to give him a “fist bump”. It was so funny! “Are you shy, Barrett? That’s okay! I was shy when I was a kid too. Now I’m EXUBERANT!” ::Black Power Ranger stance::
Eventually, his manager replied with “7pm at the Sheraton”.
Walked over to Jeff Parazzo’s (White Dino Thunder Ranger’s) table and I got his autograph and took a picture with him. He has longer hair now and looks really different (he was so cute in Dino
Thunder! *swoon*) but it was still cool meeting “Trent”. I was wearing all black and my back was all sweaty from standing in the long line to get in. When I told him I was sweaty and not to
touch my back, he said “Come here, Kristine! You’re alright, lady!” Haha! I’m sure all these guys are used to sweaty people. At least I smelled pretty from using my sister’s girly lotion.
(And my “sexy intrigue” deodorant but that’s for another time. HILARIOUS!) Ryan got Brandon Jay McLaren’s (SPD Red Ranger’s) autograph and also drooled over the now blonde Monica May (SPD Yellow).
Then, we went to the main ballroom and sat in on the “Original Red Rangers” panel with Austin St. John and Yuuta Mochizuki (Geki from Zyuranger). Is this real life??? It was amazing seeing them
sit so close to each other answering the fans’ questions. Yuuta had a translator with him but I thought he spoke English pretty well. I loved hearing him speak. He is still so handsome after all
these years. Geki forever!!!! At the end of the panel, both ASJ and Yuuta did their morphing thing. There were faulty props and the coins keep falling out but it was still awesome. Fangirl overload!
Ryan and Barrett went back to the hotel and Elizabeth and I went on our long quest to find the Sheraton where Walter’s dance class was being held. Online, it said the class was at 6 and I had a
feeling since Walter didn’t even know what time his class was being held, I figured we might as well go over there early. The Sheraton was right across from the convention center but the door close
to it was only for guests that had a key to get in. We walked all the way around and finally found the main entrance. I asked the front desk about the class and the only thing listed was a VIP meet
and greet so we figured that’s what it was. We found 2 other people waiting outside the room and talked a little about our dance background and nerded over things. Another hotel employee said the
class was at 6:30 and they were just waiting for the instructor. “The instructor?” Haha! She looked around our age. I wanted to be like “It’s Walter Jones! You know! I’m sure you probably watched
him when you were little, too!” We eventually settled into the ballroom and at 7ish, Walter arrived! You know how the class was limited to 50 people? There were only 7 of us. SEVEN! It was so
fun to be in an intimiate setting with Mr. Hip Hop Kido.
Turns out, it was a salsa class with a hip hop feel. I had no idea that he is now a ballroom dancer and a salsa world champion! During the water break, he told Elizabeth and me that he could tell
we were dancers. And we got to witness the famous body rolls in person! At the end of the class, he gave us big hugs. “I went in for a handshake and got a hug!” That was like the theme of the
weekend. After class, we went to CPK and got hard cider. We each got the 22 oz and drank it all. Yummmm! It was a slowww walk back to the hotel. HAH!!!
Day 2! I wore my Red Ranger dress and hat. Ryan wanted to get there early for the Make-A-Wish Foundation ribbon cutting ceremony. Alex Heartman (Red Samurai) was there along with some Super
Megaforce/Gokaiger cosplayers and they fought off the bad guys with the Make-A-Wish kids! It was so cute! Once the doors opened, E and I hauled butt to the line for ASJ. It wasn’t as long as I
thought it’d be when we lined up, but after a few minutes it was looping and winding around like a line at Disneyland. I saw that barely anyone was at Yuuta Mochizuki’s table, so my sis saved my
place in line and I went over there to get an autograph. When Yuuta saw me, he said something in Japanese and his assistant said “He likes your hat.” Then Yuuta made that hourglass motion with his
hands and said “You are very beautiful!” Um……what? I don’t even know how I managed to keep it together and not faint. Did Geki from Zyuranger just say that to me? I akwardly said “I love you!”
and told him how much I loved his character and blah dee blah. He said “I love you too! Now we take picture?” Is this real life? AGAIN? What a cool guy! And he dresses like a rock star! After the
picture, I tried to shake his hand and he grabbed me and gave me a hug. My. Life. Is. Made. It caught me off guard since I read somewhere on the PMC website to be courteous and to not
assume you can hug the actors. Well, what if the actors want to hug YOU? Hahahaha!
Waited in line for ASJ for about 2 hours. It was worth the wait! I brought my Legacy Mask/Helmet display that I bought from Toys R’ Us and he signed it. He was wearing a long sleeved shirt and
kept apologizing for being sweaty. You don’t have to apologize about anything, son! Power Rangers don’t sweat! They spakle! (?) I told him I had just met Yuuta and we saw their panel. Austin was
so nice! And even hunkier now that he’s older. I know people have talked crap about how he doesn’t look like he did in his “glory days” of the Power Rangers but I think he looks even better now.
I noticed he was serious looking in people’s pictures before us but he smiled in our picture. My sister and I are awkwardly charming, I know. (Hah!) I’m surprised he talked to us for so long
considering the 50 bajillion people behind us. Thanks, Austin for being so awesome! “I touched his back! He touched my back! This is so weird!” Fangirl overload.
Then we lined up to see Walter again and didn’t have to wait long. Seriously? It seemed like he never had a line. It boggled my mind because he was my favorite person to meet that weekend!
(Besides Najee’s mom but that’s later on.) Have you ever met someone and they just “ooze” coolness? I know these guys are just people but Walter is just amazing. He makes you feel amazing too!
I never got nervous around him. We didn’t even have to say anything to him when we came up to him. He remembered us right away. He told his assistant about his dance class and how we were
great. “You guys did ballet, right? I could tell. Pointing your feet and everything!” =) I got to hold the morpher and E held the Black Ranger helmet for our picture. Team Masto! Then he asked if
we were going to his panel at 2pm. YES SIR! Met up with Ryan and Barrett and we went to lunch at Yard House. I got scallops. Yum!
E and I went to Walter’s panel and had a great time. Seriously! Coolest guy ever. I want to be more like him. He remembers everybody and always has positive things to say. There was a cute
little boy that challenged him to a dance-off. So funny! His 2 kids were there right up front and asked him what is his favorite thing to do. “Swimming in the pool with you guys!” Aw! Best
dad EVER!!! Oh! Before the panel, I finally caught up with the guy that was dressed as Akira/ToQ-6 from ToQger. I loved seeing all the Super Sentai fans. I felt so at home since the only
people I ever talk about Super Sentai with is my husband and a couple people on Facebook. I wanted to dress as the female Akira but didn’t have enough time to put everything together. One day!
After the panel, we went back to the hotel to rest. Steven Skyler (our buddy the Gold Samurai’s) concert was later that night.
While waiting in line for the doors to open, we spotted Felix Ryan (Spike from Samurai) but I was too shy to ask for a picture. He looked like a regular awkward Power Ranger fan like the rest
of us so only a few of us recognized him. He tried to get into the concert early but even the security guard had no idea who he was. HAHA! Poor Spike. However Najee (Blue Samurai) walked in
early like a boss. Again….poor Spike! The concert was so fun! If you guys have the chance to check out Steven Skyler’s music, do it! He has one song on iTunes right now called “The Secret”.
I swear….I think he is a Doctor Who fan. If you listen to the lyrics it sounds like a conversation between the Doctor and his companion. Just my interpretation, though. =) Najee and Hector David
Jr. (Green Samurai and my faaaaaavorite Samurai!) were there as his announcers/hype-men. They’re hilarious. Hector did a million flips off the stage and into the crowd and I was thinking
"Well someone is getting too hyphy. He’s not going to wake up in time for Sunday!" (I was right. I never got to meet him because he was still sleeping the next day but I’ll talk more about that
in a second.) The concert started a half an hour late and it was already going on 9pm when I decided to leave early. I’m old, I know. And a mom. Barrett was hungry. =) I wanted to see if he
would sing “Everyday Fun” from the Samurai episode where Mia’s brother comes to visit but I couldn’t wait any longer. Food calls! We got take-out from BJ’s and had dinner back at the hotel.
Day 3! Hung out at the Bandai booth and saw all the new Dino Charge toys. There was controversy about the Triceratops zord’s color being changed. In Kyoryuger, it’s called Dricera and it’s
Kyoryu Pink’s beast. For Dino Charge, they changed it and made it a purple-ish color. Their reason was that boys wouldn’t play with a pink toy. WTF? I guess all us super Sentai nerds complained
enough and Dricera is pink again! HOORAY!!!!! I was bummed when Ryan said Rick Medina was not at the Samurai panel the other day but lo and behold he ended up showing up on the last day! Wild
Force Red Ranger and Deker! He was so “chill” and relaxed. Normally the actors have rates for autographs and pictures but he didn’t charge ANYTHING! “I do it allll for free!” Okay then, sir!
He was nothing like his characters. Deker is such an intense character so it was weird to see him smiley with a surfer-dude attitude. I loved it!
Lined up to meet David Yost (Blue Mighty Morphin) and he also signed my helmet display. He asked where we were from and when he heard my sis was from Vallejo, he asked about Marine World Africa
USA. Haha! Winning! His brother lives in Sonoma. We had so much stuff like our Starbucks drinks and merchandise. He helped my sis with all her bags. What a gentleman! I obviously knew that
everyone we met was going to be nice but I didn’t think they’d actually take extra time to be super personal with everyone. It must be a requirement to be a people person if you’re going to be
a Power Ranger. Haha! I’ve heard people’s stories about meeting actors at Comic Con and they were super douchey. So unfortunate but I’m glad none of that happened with us! While my sis and I
were talking to David, I overheard Ryan talking to Walter (again! That fool had no line at his table. What the heck? Everyone was in line for ASJ I understand but still!)
Ryan: I heard you were dancing with my wife last night.
Walter: What’s that?
Ryan: (points over at me) That’s my wife.
Walter: Oh yeah! HAHA! It was fun. She was great! ::dances in his chair::
Hilarious! Ryan is so funny. We went to the
Mighty Morphin panel featuring ASJ, Walter, and David. I love how there weren’t any concrete subjects during the panels. They just let everyone line up and ask questions. My favorite part of this
panel was when someone asked Walter “What do you say to people that think Power Rangers was racist and stereotypical?” Walter’s answer was perfect:
"If the show was being racist and stereotypical, I would’ve played a bad guy. But I didn’t. I was the Black Ranger. I was the first Black Superhero. Being the Black Ranger made me even more proud
to be an African American and be the face for many colored people out there.”
Hooray! Walter wins for being the best guy ever at Morphicon. Plus, it was a children’s show! I don’t think kids think about stuff like race. The black guy was the Black Ranger and the Yellow
Ranger was Asian, you say? Well….guess what? Power Rangers is based on Super Sentai and EVERYONE is frickin Asian! Haha! I have no point to that but why does it matter? After the MMPR panel, we went to check if the
Samurai guys were there yet. Oh! I forgot to say that earlier when we were leaving the Westin, we rode the elevator with Brittany Pirtle the Yellow Samurai. She is so cute and tiny. Barrett was
so shy and didn’t say anything. She saw all the Megazord toys and our Morphicon badges and asked if we were going back over to the convention. I wanted to ask for a picture but she was just
in her sweats and no makeup and I know some girls just don’t like to be photographed until they have their face on. (Mind you: she is gorgeous without makeup on.) Okay back to the Samurai table.
Najee (the Blue Samurai) and his mom were there. I just want to say that Najee’s mom is THE BEST! I love how supportive she is and comes with him to his conventions. We talked about running
marathons and she liked my Gold Ranger necklace. She noticed my sister’s clasp on her necklace was in front and fixed it for her. HAHA! What a sweet woman. Najee gave me options on a prop to hold
for my picture. YES of course I choose the samurai sword. My sister showed him the picture and he said “HAH! It looks like you’re slicing me!” Chop chop!
Went to Steven Skyler’s table and he lit up when I mentioned his concert. He said the sound was really bad but I’m sure people didn’t care about that. We took like a billion pictures with him
because his friend taking our pictures said he looked funny in each one. “You look creepy. What are you doing?” Steven saw the pictures and said he looked like a hunchback. HAHAHAHA! I told him it
was probably because we’re so short and told him to stand up straight! Oh you know…..just being a mom. Giving the Gold Ranger lessons on posture. ;) Ryan mentioned that I should get a
picture with Jeff Parazzo and Steven because they both look like Johhny Dep with their long-ish hair and hats. “The Johnny Depp-off!” I love sixth rangers. Steven is such a Cheesepie. Joking around with
him and my sister was one of my favorite parts. Mr. Barracuda Blade, you rock! Thanks for the other poster! I met him earlier in San Jose and he thought Barrett’s name was cool. ::brushes
To end the day, Ryan bid on a legendary key pack signed by Jason David Frank at the Make-A-Wish silent auction. JDF wasn’t there, though. He was at Wizard World. WW is coming to Sacramento next
year. Planning to meet him then so I can get more autographs on my helmet display! I basically hounded the table to make sure no one else bid on the keys because I wanted them, dangit! Is that
cheating? Either way, we WON! My sister noticed there was an eyelash on the package. “Wow! Is it JDF’s?” HAHAHA!!! Power Morphicon happens every 2 years so hopefully we can go again in 2016.
I’m excited for the new Dino Charge team. (Based on Super Sentai’s Kyoryuger which is AWESOME!) I had a great time meeting a lot of wonderful people. This is going down in the books as one of
the most memorable weekends of my life! I always say “Don’t put anybody on a pedestal. Your heroes are just people. Be your OWN hero!” but these guys (espcially the Mighty Morphin guys)
definitely deserve the title of a “hero”. It’s really weird to think that we’d meet the guys we used to pretend to be like when we were kids. I don’t care if people think I’m weird or creepy
for still being a superfan of a children’s show. You’re never too old to love the Power Rangers! “BA-SIC!!!!” ;)
This confuses me on so many levels
